Hari Vishnu Kamath

(1907 – 1982) – (Karnataka)

Hari Vishnu Kamath (Aged 75) born in 1907, was an Indian politician and member of the Constituent Assembly of India. He was elected to the lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, from Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, India. Kamath was born in Mangalore, Madras Presidency, and joined the Indian Civil Service in 1930. As an officer, he was straightforward and opposed the present system.

When Kamath wanted to join the National Movement in 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru did not approve, but Subhas Chandra Bose asked him to join Congress. Subhas became his learned advisor and political mentor. Kamath joined Congress on January 26, 1936, and became the personal secretary of Subhas Chandra Bose when he was elected as President of Congress in 1938. Kamath was appointed as the secretary of the Parliamentary Coordination Committee. In 1938, when Subhas Chandra Bose formed the National Planning Committee, Kamath became its secretary and Jawaharlal Nehru its President.

When in May 1939, Subhas Chandra formed the Forward Bloc, Kamath was appointed as its organizing Secretary. He was jailed for one year with RI when he worked against the decision of the war. He was again jailed in 1942. When the Forward Bloc was declared illegal on June 21, 1942, he was arrested and detained without trial until 1945. Kamath became a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1946.

He opposed special facilities to be given to the President and Prime Minister of Kashmir. He was a tremendous critic of raising the Kashmir issue in the United Nations. He was elected as an independent candidate to the Lok Sabha in 1955. Kamath was also elected as a member of PSP to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and 1967. He was a member of the Administrative Reform committee in 1966. He went to Taiwan to inquire about Netaji’s so-called death in a plane crash in Taihaku. Kamath passed away in 1982.
