Jagannath Sarkar (Aged 92) was born on September 25, 1919, in Puri, Orissa, India. He was from a Bengali family and was an Indian Communist leader, freedom fighter, and writer on social issues. Growing up, Sarkar was exposed to the atmosphere of the Bengal renaissance, and his family was inspired by Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda, and Rabindranath Tagore.
During his youth, Sarkar frequented the Ramakrishna Mission at Patna, where he was introduced to Marxist literature by one of the priests. At Patna University, where he studied economics, Sarkar became associated with the Freedom Movement and the nascent Communist Party in Bihar. He became an activist among students and educated people. Sarkar passed away on April 8, 2011.
