Lala Achint Ram

(1898 – 1961) – (Punjab)

Lala Achint Ram (Aged 63) was born on 19 August 1898 in Kot Mohammad Khan, Amritsar district, Punjab, India. He received his education at government high schools in Amritsar and Shimla, and later went to DAV College in Lahore (now in Pakistan) to pursue higher education. In 1921, he was one of the first three members of the Servants of the People Society founded by Lala Lajpat Rai. Lala Achint Ram joined the Congress party in his youth and actively participated in its movements.

He was imprisoned by the British government for his involvement in freedom movements from 1930–32, 1939, 1940, and 1942–45. He was a member of the Congress Working Committee, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, and All India Congress Committee. He also served as the president of the Punjab Provincial Election Tribunal and National Industrial High School for two years.

In 1925, he married Satyavati Devi, also a freedom fighter herself. She was arrested on 26 August 1942, along with her three young children, but continued her protests inside the prison and organized demonstrations for better living conditions there. Even after independence, the family stayed at Lajpat Bhawan in Lahore, where she cooked meals for hundreds of displaced refugees before moving to Delhi in 1948. Lala Achint Ram passed away in 1961.
