Madan Lal Dhingra (Aged 26) born on 17 February 1883 in Amritsar, Punjab, India, came from a very wealthy family. His family was loyal to the British regime. In the year 1906, he went to England to study engineering, and there he came in contact with Veer Savarkar and his associates.
He firmly believed that actions and sacrifices were needed, not just words, to achieve India’s liberation. He shot and killed Curzon Wyllie, who was considered an anti-Indian officer of the British regime. After assassinating Curzon Wyllie, his doctor father disowned him.
On 1 July 1909, during a meeting of the National Indian Association, an organization of Indian loyalists, he shot Curzon Wyllie dead. He made no attempt to escape, and during the course of the hearing of his case, he asked for a death sentence himself. He was hanged in London on 17 August 1909.
When he was sentenced to death, he gracefully thanked the judge. This brave freedom fighter of our soil had a remarkable spirit of sacrifice.
