Madhab Chandra Routray

(Odisha)

Madhab Chandra Routray, also known as ‘Samanta’ was the dalabehera or the Paika unit commander of Tapanga in modern-day Khordha district of Odisha. In 1827, he led a revolt against British East India Company forces. With the support of the local community, the warriors under his command fought against the British attack on Tapanga for seven days.

However, due to a lack of resources, dwindling support, and a traitor passing information to the British from within the Paika ranks, he was eventually forced to surrender. The British recognized Routray’s stature within the community and the risk of a mass uprising if he were harmed. Hence, he was later released. Routray’s forefathers also received the title of ‘Samanta’ for their military services to the Gajapati king of Khordha.
