Madhav Shrihari Aney (Aged 88) was born in 1880 and was popularly known as Loknayak Bapuji Aney. He was an ardent educationist, freedom fighter, statesman, modern Sanskrit poet, and politician. Along with Madan Mohan Malaviya, he was one of the founders of the Congress Nationalist Party. He was the first among the eminent disciples of Lokmanya Tilak and after Tilak’s death, he accepted the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
Aney disapproved of Congress’ involvement in the Khilafat Movement and warned against excessive wooing of Muslims at the cost of national interests. Mahatma Gandhi admired his calm logic, confided in him, and often sought his counsel. He was chosen to arbitrate disputes between Subhash Chandra Bose and Jatindra Mohan Sengupta. He passed away in 1968.
