Madhavrao Khanderao Bagal

(1895 – 1986) – (Maharashtra)

Madhavrao Khanderao Bagal (Aged 91) also known as Bhai Madhavrao Bagal, was born on 28 May 1895 in Kolhapur. He was a renowned writer, artist, journalist, social reformer, political activist, orator, and freedom fighter. He completed his early education at Rajaram High School in Kolhapur and later pursued painting, modelling, and mural decoration courses from J.J. School of Art in Bombay.

As a social reformer, he worked towards uplifting the Dalit community and advocated for their right to visit temples and mingle with other castes. His father was a staunch Satyashodhak and Madhavrao followed in his footsteps. In 1927, he declared that Satyashodhaks should become socialists. As a political activist, he founded Praja Parishad in Kolhapur State in 1939 and worked towards raising the voice of farmers against unjust revenues through agitations, with Ratnappa Kumbhar and others as his chief companions.

Madhavrao was among the front-runner leaders who spearheaded the agitation for India’s independence and especially the merger of Kolhapur State into the Union of India. He was arrested along with several of his compatriots, including Ratnappa Kumbhar, Dinakara Desai, Nanasaheb Jagadale, R. D. Minche, and others. He joined the Indian National Congress in the mid-1930s, disillusioned by the pro-British politics played by older leaders of the peasant movement like Bhaskarrao Jadhav, with whom Madhavrao had started agricultural co-operative societies in Kolhapur and adjoining regions. During 1940-47, he closely worked with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

He was one of the front-runner leaders from the Maratha community who jointly formed the Peasants and Workers Party in 1947 with other former Congressmen. Madhavrao authored about 30-35 books. He passed away on 6 March 1986.
