Mallappa Dhanshetti (Aged 33) was born in 1898 in Solapur, Maharashtra, India. He was a prominent and influential political worker and Indian freedom fighter in Sholapur. While working in a private firm, he took an active part in the Civil Disobedience movement in 1930.
In 1930, the British Government imposed a “Shoot on sight” order under martial law in Solapur to suppress the freedom movement. However, Mallappa, along with Shrikisan Laxminarayan Sarada, Abdul Rasool Qurban Hussain, and Jagannath Bhagwan Shinde, defied the martial law. As a result, the Government sentenced all four to death.
On May 8, 1930, Mallappa led a large procession to protest against the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi. The police attempted to stop it, which led to firing, resulting in several deaths. In the ensuing clash, one police constable was killed, and another was burnt alive.
Martial Law was imposed in Sholapur, and Dhanshetti was arrested along with others. He was tried for rioting and murder and was sentenced to death. He was hanged at the Yerwada Jail, Poona, on January 12, 1931.
