Maninder Nath Banerjee

(1909 – 1934) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Maninder Nath Banerjee (Aged 25) was born on January 13th, 1909, in Pandeyghat, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father’s name was Dr. Tara Charan Banerji, and he actively participated in the nationalist movement against British rule. Banerjee joined the Hindustan Republican Army and considered Rajender Lahiri his guru. Interestingly, his uncle Jitender Banerjee was a police officer who provided evidence leading to Lahiri’s execution.

Banerjee was responsible for the killing of his maternal uncle, Shri J.N. Banerji, who was the Deputy Superintendent of Police and in charge of investigating the Kakori Conspiracy Case. While interned in Fatehgarh jail, he began a hunger strike with other political prisoners on May 14th, 1934, to protest their mistreatment. After 66 days of fasting, Banerjee passed away on June 20th, 1934, in the company of fellow prisoner Manmath Nath Gupt.
