Marshal Nesamony

(1895 – 1968) – (Tamilnadu)

Nesamony (Aged 91) born on June 12, 1895, in Nesarpuram, Palliyadi, located in the Vilavancode Taluk of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, India, He is also known as Marshal Nesamony, was the second son of Kesavan Appavu Nadar. He received his education at Scott Christian High School and later at C.M.S. College in Tirunelveli.

After completing his BA degree at Maharaja’s College, Trivandrum, he embarked on a teaching career, initially spending a year at Kurnool Bishop Heeber High School. Subsequently, he became the headmaster at Salvation Army Middle School in Trivandrum. Simultaneously, he pursued his legal studies at Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram. During his time at C.M.S. College, he was elected as a student leader, affording him the opportunity to attend the Congress Conference in Calcutta.

In 1921, Nesamony commenced his legal practice. He played a significant role in the merger of four Taluks from Southern Travancore into Tamil Nadu. Under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, he committed to wearing Khadi cotton garments exclusively throughout his life.

Nesamony formally registered as a lawyer at Nagercoil Sessions Court in 1921, where he specialized in criminal law at the Nagercoil Bar. In 1943, he was elected as the president of the Nagercoil Lawyers’ Association and simultaneously as the chairman of the Nagercoil Municipal Council. Known for his legal prowess, Nesamony served as a mentor to numerous young advocates, regardless of their caste or religion. These aspiring lawyers, including individuals like Chidambaranathan Nadar, Ponnappan Nadar, Gopalakrishnan, Fakrudeen Adam, Razak, and TTNC president Sam Nathaniel, gained valuable insights from him and later made significant contributions to society as lawyers and politicians. He passed away on 1 June 1968.
