Master Surya Sen

(1894 – 1934) – (West Bengal)

Surya Sen (Aged 40) was born on 22 March 1894 in Noapara, under Raozan Upazila in Chittagong, West Bengal, India. He became a school teacher and later became the President of Chittagong local Congress, but he eventually joined the revolutionary Anushilan Dal. He led the armory raid on Chittagong on 18 April 1930.

The Chittagong revolutionary movement was running parallel to the revolutionary movement in Punjab, and Master Surjyo Sen was as popular in Bengal as Bhagat Singh was in Punjab. The Chittagong movement continued for a few years, and Master Surya Sen was arrested in 1933 and sentenced to death. He was executed on 12 January 1934 in Chittagong jail, which has now been turned into a national memorial by the Bangladesh government.
