Venkatarama Ramalingam (Aged 84) also known as V. Ramalingam Pillai, was born on 19 October 1888 in Mohanur, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India. His parents were Venkataraman and Ammaniammaal. Ramalingam, popularly known as Namakkal Kavignar, was a Tamil poet and independence fighter. He is famous for his poems about independence. Apart from himself, he had seven siblings.
Ramalingam’s father worked in the police department in Mohanur, and his mother was a pious lady. He completed his school education in Namakkal and Coimbatore and obtained his BA in 1909 from Bishop Heber College in Trichy. Initially, he worked as a clerk at the Namakkal Tahsildar’s office and later worked as a primary school teacher.
Ramalingam wrote hundreds of poems with patriotic fervor and participated in the Salt Satyagraha against the British government in 1930, for which he was imprisoned for one year. He was awarded the Padmabhushan in 1971 by the Indian government for his contributions. He passed away on 24 August 1972.
