Poswuyi Swuro

(1919 – ★) – (Nagaland)

Reverend Poswuyi Swuro, born in 1919 in Ruzazho Village, Phek District, Nagaland, India, holds the distinction of being the first Christian convert from his village and is presently the oldest resident. During World War II, when the Japanese and the Indian National Army (INA) entered Ruzazho Village, he played a pivotal role in bridging the communication gap between them and the local population.

As schools closed due to the war, Poswuyi returned to his village, and during this time, he had a significant encounter with Netaji Chandra Bose when the INA and Japanese forces arrived in Ruzazho Village on April 4, 1941. Netaji personally appointed him as the Area Administrator (D.B) and his brother as the Interpreter, along with other villagers designated as Village Elders (GB).

Poswuyi’s responsibilities included conveying messages from Netaji to the villagers and organizing the collection of rations for Japanese forces. He personally transported these supplies to INA and Japanese camps, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his role.

Additionally, he served as a guide, leading troops through challenging terrain toward the British forces, despite the inherent risks during wartime. During one mission, while escorting Japanese soldiers to Zunheboto, they had to halt at Satakha due to the heavy presence of British troops. On their return journey, they were ambushed by the British, resulting in casualties among Japanese soldiers and a Naga civilian. Poswuyi and his brother managed to escape and return to the village.

Though promises of post-war development made by Netaji went unfulfilled, Poswuyi dedicated his life to the betterment of his village, introducing education in 1950. His remarkable service and sacrifices during World War II remain a testament to his unwavering patriotism and courage.

In recognition of the Nagas’ support for the Japanese and Azad Hind Fauj, a tablet was erected in Ruzazho Village. In 2021, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu visited and interacted with Poswuyi in his native village.
