Sadai Mallik was from Duspalla, which was part of the erstwhile Duspalla State in Nayagarh district of Odisha. In 1915, he was arrested for his rebellious activities during the tribal revolt against the State in 1913-14. The State Administration summarily sentenced him to death, and he was hanged within a few days of his capture.
