Sanku Dass Byrage was a native of the Bombay Presidency and had joined the rebels during the Uprising of 1857. He fought against the British in various locations throughout the Bombay area and played a crucial role in seizing the British treasury and arms, which he passed on to the rebel command. Unfortunately, during one of the Company’s attacks on the rebels, Sanku Dass Byrage was apprehended. He was subsequently charged with looting the Government treasury and rebellion against the British. Consequently, in 1857, he was sentenced to transportation for life and sent to the Andaman Islands in June 1858. Sadly, he died while in captivity there in August 1859.
