Shaheed Dhan Singh Gurjar was born into a farming family in the village of Panchli. From an early age, he was well acquainted with the plight of the Native Indians and the exploitative land revenue system introduced by the East India Company. Shaheed Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar played a key role in the uprising of his hometown, Meerut, during which other officers fled the city in fear.
He led thousands of villagers to the district jail and, according to official records, they released more than 800 prisoners that night. Despite being a police officer under the British authorities, Dhan Singh inspired many to fight against British rule for the nation. In retaliation, colonial rule bombed his own village, claiming the lives of numerous innocent people. He passed away on July 4, 1857.
