Shashi Bhushan (Aged 78) was an Indian independence activist, social worker, politician, writer, and institution builder. He was born in 1924 in Lashkar, Madhya Pradesh. He played an active role in the Indian freedom struggle and was involved in the Quit India movement.
Bhushan founded several organizations, including Rashtriya Ekta Samiti, All India Freedom Fighters’ Organization, Punjab Ekta Samiti, and the Institute for Socialist Education. He served as a Member of Parliament for Khargone (Madhya Pradesh) from 1967-1971 and for South Delhi in the 5th Lok Sabha from 1971-1977.
Bhushan wrote the only known work about Feroze Gandhi, titled “Feroze Gandhi: A Political Biography,” who was the politician-journalist husband of Indira Gandhi. In 2006, the Government of India awarded Bhushan the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, for his contributions to public affairs.
Furthermore, the Institute for Social Education, which Bhushan founded in 1970, received the National Communal Harmony Award from the President of India in 2007. Bhushan passed away in 2011.
