Shiva Varma

(1904 – 1997) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Shiva Varma (Aged 93) was born on February 9, 1904, and his father’s name was K.L. Verma. He was a Bachelor of Science student at D.A.V. College in Kanpur and served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army and an organizer in Uttar Pradesh. He went underground for about 18 months before being arrested on May 13, 1929, in connection with the Lahore Conspiracy case.

During his trial in Lahore Jail, he went on a hunger strike. He was later sentenced to transportation for life to the Andamans. In the Cellular Jail, he participated in two hunger strikes, one for 45 days in May 1933, and the other for 37 days in July 1937. He was finally repatriated in 1937. However, after his release, he was arrested several times and spent most of his time in jail until 1947. He passed away on January 10, 1997, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
