Someswar Kakoti, a veteran freedom fighter, hails from Amguri, a town located in the Sivasagar district of Assam. He served as the Secretary of the Amguri Congress Committee and was a pioneer in initiating the first movement program in the region. However, for this, he had to face police and military atrocities. In 1930, he was arrested for opposing the Cunningham circular.
Again in 1932, he was imprisoned for six months. From 1940 to 1941, he was sent to jail for actively participating in the Satyagraha Movement. Following the Congress party leader’s instructions, Kakoti went underground when a warrant was issued to arrest him under Section 126/A. Despite being in hiding, he continued his part in the movement. Moreover, he also participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942. On 9 August 2008, he was facilitated with a shawl and wrist watch by the President of India Smt Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
