Sri Aurobindo Ghose

(1872 – 1950) – (West Bengal)

Sri Aurobindo Ghose (Aged 78) also known as Aurobindo, was born on August 15, 1872, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He was an Indian nationalist, philosopher, yoga guru, maharishi, and poet, who was also a journalist and edited newspapers such as BandeMataram. He played an influential role in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule, until 1910, after which he became a spiritual reformer and introduced his visions on human progress and spiritual evolution. Aurobindo studied at King’s College, Cambridge, England, to prepare for the Indian Civil Service.

Upon returning to India, he took up various civil service positions under the Maharaja of the Princely State of Baroda and became increasingly involved in nationalist politics in the Indian National Congress and the nascent revolutionary movement in Bengal with the Anushilan Samiti. Following a series of bombings linked to his organization, he was arrested and faced charges of treason for Alipore Conspiracy. However, Aurobindo could only be convicted and imprisoned for writing articles against British colonial rule in India. He was released when no evidence could be provided following the murder of a prosecution witness, Narendranath Goswami, during the trial.

During his imprisonment, he had mystical and spiritual experiences, which led him to move to Pondicherry and leave politics for spiritual work. At Pondicherry, Aurobindo developed a spiritual practice he called Integral Yoga, with the central theme of the evolution of human life into a divine life in a divine body. He believed in a spiritual realization that could not only liberate but also transform human nature, enabling a divine life on earth.

In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa (referred to as “The Mother”), he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. His main literary works include The Life Divine, which deals with the philosophical aspects of Integral Yoga, Synthesis of Yoga, which deals with the principles and methods of Integral Yoga and Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, an epic poem. Aurobindo passed away on December 5, 1950.
