Sukumar Sengupta

Sukumar Sengupta was born in 1913 in Midnapore, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and his father’s name was Charuchandra Sengupta. While studying Intermediate Science at Midnapore College, he was arrested for alleged involvement in the Burge Action, sentenced to life imprisonment, and deported to the Cellular jail. He took part in the hunger strike in July 1937, which continued for 37 days.

However, after five and a half years in jail, he was repatriated and released. He was brought back to Alipore jail, where he again went on a hunger strike in 1939 for 36 days. He was finally released on August 31, 1946. His total jail period was 13 years.
