(1889 – 1971) – (Bihar)

Syed Mahmud (aged 82) was born in 1889 in Syedpur Bhitri, Ghazipur, Bihar, India. He was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence movement and in post-independence India, and was also a member of the foundation committee of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Mahmud actively participated in the Indian Home Rule Movement in 1916, as well as in the Non-cooperation movement and the Khilafat movement under the guidance and leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He authored the book “The Khilafat & England”, and was imprisoned in 1922. After the sweeping Congress victory in the 1937 central and provincial elections, Syed Mahmud was considered a leading prospective candidate to serve as Chief Minister of Bihar.

He was also one of the secular Muslim leaders who opposed the Muslim League’s demand for the creation of a separate Muslim state of Pakistan. He passed away in Bihar, India, in 1971.
