Tirumale Ranganatha Shamanna (Aged 78) known as T. R. Shamanna was born on March 13, 1912 in Tirumale, Magadi Ramanagara, Karnataka, India. He was an Indian politician, social activist, educationist, and independence movement activist from Karnataka. In 1938, Shamanna founded the Shri Ranganatha Institute of Commerce to provide typing and stenography (shorthand) skills to the emerging working population of South Bangalore.
Realizing the growing need of Bengaluru city, Shamanna initiated the formation of new layouts for residential purposes of citizens. In 1975, Shamanna co-founded the National Co-operative Bank, which is now one of the largest co-operative banks in Karnataka. He was instrumental in mobilizing initial share capital and getting the society registered as a bank by obtaining the Reserve Bank of India license within a short period. He passed away on August 30, 1990, in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
