Tarakeshwar Sengupta

(1905 – 1931) – (West Bengal)

Tarakeshwar Sengupta (Aged 74) was born on 15 April 1905 in Gaila village, West Bengal, India. He was an Indian independence activist who participated in the Chittagong Armoury Raid as a member of the revolutionary group led by Masterda Surya Sen. He was also a member of the Jugantar Party and participated in the Salt Satyagraha during the Civil Disobedience movement.

Sengupta was arrested on 28 August 1930 and detained in Barisal Jail without trial. He was convicted by the Sub-Deputy Magistrate, Barisal on 22 November 1930 under section 504 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced to three months of rigorous imprisonment. He was then transferred to Rajshahi Central Jail on 15 December 1930 and to Hijli Camp on 14 March 1931.

Unfortunately, he was shot dead at Hijli Camp on 16 September 1931 during an attack on the prisoners detained without trial by Jamuna Singh, Head Warden and his subordinate.
