Thandavarayan

(1700 – ★) – (Tamilnadu)

Thandavarayan, also known as Thandavarayan Pillai, was born in 1700 to Kathavaraya Pillai in Sivagangai District of Tamil Nadu, India. He held significant roles as Dalavay (military chief) and Pirathani (Chief Minister) under the rule of three monarchs in the Sivagangai Samasthanam. His contributions greatly impacted the development of Sivagangai Samasthanam.

Initially, he served under King Sasivarna Periya Udaya Thevar from 1730 to 1750. Subsequently, he continued his service under King Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar from 1750 to 1772. He also served as Pirithanai to Queen Rani Velu Nachiyar.

Thandavarayan Pillai was an adept administrator, and his excellent governance earned him hereditary management rights, which were granted by King Udaya Thevar. He provided valuable advice to Veera Mangai, suggesting she relocate frequently to evade British invaders. Additionally, on behalf of Velu Nachiyar, Thandavarayan Pillai wrote a letter to Sultan Hyder Ali, requesting 5000 infantry and 5000 cavalry to help defeat the British army. Tragically, he passed away due to old age.

Thandavarayan Pillai held a permanent place in the hearts of Rani Velu Natchiyar and Sasivarna Periya Udaiya Thevar, earning him various titles such as Kaaruyakkara, Pradhani, and Manthiri.
