Tirukarugavur Bandulu known as Bandulu Iyer was born in Tirukarugavur, located in Papanasam taluk of Tanjore district, Tamil Nadu, India. Driven by his deep patriotism, he actively took part in various freedom struggle activities during his era. To facilitate his involvement in these movements, he relocated to Kumbakonam. In 1930, during the height of the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha, a group of volunteers led by Rajaji embarked on a journey by foot from Trichy. At that time, Bandulu Iyer, serving as the president of the City Congress Committee, extended a warm welcome to them when they reached Kumbakonam.
He organized a reception for these volunteers at the current Gandhi Park, situated across from the Town High School. During this event, the ‘self-respect’ movement, which was gaining momentum in Tamil Nadu, attempted to incite discord among the crowd by distributing leaflets and raising challenging questions. Bandulu Iyer chaired the meeting and effectively managed the situation before proceeding with the gathering. Rajaji and other prominent leaders were hosted at Bandulu Iyer’s residence on Kamachi Josier Street.
Subsequently, when the Salt Satyagraha marchers reached Vedaranyam through Mannargudi and Tirutharapoondi, Bandulu Iyer addressed gatherings in each town they passed through. Finally, he actively participated in the meeting held in Vedaranyam, which resulted in his arrest along with K. Chandanam. Both were sentenced to prison and subsequently transferred to Trichy Jail.
