Tumi Pradhan was born in the village of Gandhipada in the former Keonjhar Princely State, in the tehsil of Dandapata, Dist. Rayagada, Orissa (Odisha). In 1868, when Ratna Naik openly revolted against the Bhanja rulers of Keonjhar State (one of the British tributary Mahals in Orissa) to address the economic and political grievances of the State’s people, Tumi joined the rebel ranks with great enthusiasm.
The British forces immediately came to the aid of the Raja to quell the rebellion. The clashes between the rebels and the combined British and State forces continued for almost five months, from April to August. Ultimately, by August, the rebels were defeated, captured, and tried for rebellion and murder. Tumi Pradhan was among the seven people who were sentenced to death on 30 November 1868 and subsequently hanged in Cuttack.
