U-Kiang Nangbah was a native of Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, India. He became the leader of the Jaintia Uprising against the British Government when they imposed a House Tax in the region in 1860, which caused great dissatisfaction among the people. Under his leadership, the Jaintia people rebelled against the British.
The rebels succeeded in capturing the army camp in Jowai on 17 January 1862, which forced the British Government to send a massive force to suppress the rebellion. After an armed confrontation, Nangbah was arrested and subsequently hanged on 30 December 1862 for daring to defy the British authorities.
