Udumalai Narayana Kavi (Aged 82) was born on September 25, 1899 in Poolavadi, Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India. His parents died when he was very young, and he was deprived of an education due to poverty. However, with the help of his brother, he managed to earn a small living by selling matchboxes in nearby villages. Udumalai Narayana Kavi was an Indian poet and lyricist renowned for his work in Tamil films.
During the freedom struggle, he wrote songs with patriotic sentiments and performed them on stage. In his early days, he wrote lyrics for plays that had the simplicity of folklore and the richness of Tamil literature. In 1933, he began writing songs for films and identified himself as a “poet race” by naming himself Narayana Kavi.
He is best known for writing several lyrics that were used in the freedom movement in his early days and between 1950 and 1972. He wrote lyrics for many Tamil movies, several of which were box office hits in the 1940s and 1950s, such as Velaikari, Nallathambi, Poompuhar, Parasakthi, and Manohara.
In the movie industry, he was affectionately known as “Paguththarivu Kaviraayar” or simply “Kaviraayar.” He passed away on May 23, 1981 in Poolavadi, Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India.
