Upendranath Banerjee

(1897 – 1945) – (West Bengal)

Upendranath Banerjee (Aged 48) was born in 1897 in French Chandannagar, West Bengal, India, and his father’s name was Jadunath Banerjee. He studied at Medical College, but was sentenced to life transportation in the Alipore Bomb case and deported to the Andamans.

He was released in 1920, but was arrested again under Regulation III of 1818 in 1923 and was not released until 1926. Upendranath was a well-known journalist and author. After his release, he served on the editorial board of publications like “Bijali” and “Atmasakti”. In his book “Nirvasiter Atmakatha”, he vividly portrayed the agonies, hardships, and sufferings of prison life in Andamans.

In 1945, Upendranath became the editor of “Dainik Basumati,” a Bengali newspaper, and remained with it until his death that same year.
