V. Duraiyanar Adigal

(1891 – 1973) – (Tamilnadu)

V. Duraiyanar Adidal (Aged 82) was born on May 12, 1891, in Rudibord, Thranjuwal, South Africa. He participated in the Indian freedom struggle and was the son of Venkatachalam Pillai and Chellattachi. His original name was Duraisamy, but he changed it to Duraiyanar Adigar after studying Tamil with the Kharayamalaiadigar.

Father Venkatachalam Pillai’s ancestors went to Mauritius and South Africa for business, and while in South Africa, Duraiyanar Adidal excelled in various martial arts such as football, cricket, and boxing, conducted by Indians.

In 1909, he was imprisoned in the Sogansburg Jail at Durianar Attal for participating in the peaceful disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. After a Monday in that jail, he was brought before Justice Vernon and sentenced to six months for burning and having no identification, fifteen days in the local jail, and six months in Deepgluf jail. He passed away on January 5, 1973.
