Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (Aged 86), also known as Beypore Sulthan, was born on January 21, 1908, in Kerala, India. He was an Indian independence activist and a renowned writer of Malayalam literature. Basheer was known for his simple, down-to-earth style of writing that made him popular among both literary critics and the common man.
Some of his notable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Mathilukal, Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu, Janmadinam, and Anargha Nimisham. Translations of his works into other languages earned him worldwide acclaim. In 1982, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor.
Basheer also received the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, the Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship, and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story. After completing his primary education at a local Malayalam medium school, he went to an English medium school in Vaikom, five miles away, for higher education. It was during this time that he met Mahatma Gandhi, and he became his follower after Gandhi’s visit to Vaikom for the satyagraha, which later became known as Vaikom Satyagraham. Inspired by the swadeshi ideals of Gandhi, Basheer started wearing Khādī. He passed away on July 5, 1994.
