Vanchinathan

(1886 – 1911) – (Tamilnadu)

Vanchinatha Iyer (Aged 25) also known as Vanchinathan, was born in Shenkottai, Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, India in 1886. He was the son of Shri Raghupathy Iyer and had completed his primary education before joining the Forest Department. Vanchinathan was involved in revolutionary activities against the British. At the age of 25, on 17 June 1911, he assassinated Robert Ashe, the district collector of Tirunelveli, also known as Collector Dorai.

Vanchinathan shot Ashe at point-blank range while Ashe’s train had stopped at the Maniyachi Station en route to Madras. He committed suicide after the assassination. The railway station was later renamed Vanchi Maniyachi in his honor. The mastermind behind the assassination was Nilakanta Brahmachari, who had been recruiting cadres and plotting against the British in the Madras presidency since 1910.

Shankar Krishna Iyer, Vanchinathan’s brother-in-law, introduced Nilakanta Brahmachari and Vanchinathan to each other. Together with a few other men, they founded an organization called Bharatha Matha Sangam, which plotted the assassination of influential British men.
