Vengal Chakkarai

(1890 – 1958) – (Tamilnadu)

Vengal Chakkarai Chettiar (Aged 78) was born on January 17, 1880, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was an Indian Christian theologian, missionary, independence activist, politician, and trade unionist, who served as the former president of AITUC. Chakkarai was born into a Hindu Chettiar family and received his education at the Scottish Mission School and Madras Christian College, where he graduated in 1901 with a major in philosophy. He also studied at Madras Law College and practiced law for some time.

In 1913, Chakkarai joined the Danish Mission Room as a Christian preacher and worked as a missionary for twenty years. During this time, he became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and actively participated in the Indian independence movement. He also served as the mayor of Madras from 1941 to 1942 and as the president of All India Trade Union Congress from 1954 to 1957.

Chakkarai attempted to explain the Christian faith from a Hindu perspective. This can be seen in his attempt to find the meaning of the cross for followers of Christianity in terms of how to attain moksha. He passed away on June 14, 1958.
