Vettikkattiri Sultan

(1897 – 1922) – (Kerala)

Vettikkattiri Sultan (Aged 25) born on 1897 hailed from Vettikkattiri amsom in Wandoor taluka, Malappuram district, Kerala. He was apprehended for his involvement in the Malabar rebellion of 1921, which was aimed against the oppressive Jenmis and the British colonial authorities. The rebellion coincided with the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movement.

Sultan was taken into custody as an under-trial prisoner on 5 June 1922 and confined to the Manjeri Sub-Jail. However, due to harsh police torture, poor sanitation, overcrowding, and a lack of clean water and food, he contracted pneumonia. Tragically, Sultan passed away at the young age of 25 on 21 June 1922 while still in jail.
