Vijay Singh Pathik (Aged 72) was born in Guthawali, Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, India in 1882 to Hamir Singh and Kamal Kunwari in a Gurjar family. His father, Hamir Singh, was an active participant in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and was arrested several times. Pathik’s grandfather, Inder Singh, was the Prime Minister (Diwan) of Malagarh principality (Riyasat) and was killed while fighting against the British. Although his birth name was Bhup Singh, he changed it to “Vijay Singh Pathik” after being implicated in the Lahore Conspiracy Case in 1915.
Pathik joined a revolutionary organization in his teenage years and actively fought against British rule in India. His non-cooperation movement was so successful that Lokmanya Tilak wrote a letter to Maharana Fateh Singh to meet the demands of the Bijoliya agitators. Mahatma Gandhi sent his secretary, Mahadev Desai, to study the movement. Pathik also fought for the cause of united Rajasthan and took up the issue with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel.
He was jailed for leading the Kisan agitation in Bijoliya and was kept in a special jail created in the Tehsil building of Todgarh. The Kisan Panchayat, Mahila Mandal, and Yuvak Mandal invited Pathik to come and lead them. Women of Mewar began to gain respect from their fellow men. Pathik made people understand that gender equality was necessary to develop a prosperous society.
Pathik was a great patriot and freedom fighter. As author Indira Vyas said, “He would prefer to end his life rather than to bow down to the flag.” He also wrote the famous flag song, which was very popular during that period. Pathik passed away in 1954 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.
