Vinayak Narahari “Vinoba” Bhave (Aged 87) born on September 11, 1895. He was an Indian advocate of nonviolence and human rights. Often referred to as Acharya (Sanskrit for teacher), he is best known for founding the Bhoodan Movement. Bhave is considered a National Teacher of India and the spiritual successor of Mahatma Gandhi. He was also an eminent philosopher and translated the Gita into Marathi language, naming it Geetai, which means “mother Geeta.”
Bhave created the Brahma Vidya Mandir, a small community for women to become self-sufficient and non-violent. Indian film director Sarvottam Badami previously made a documentary on him, titled “Vinoba Bhave,” in 1951. In 1958, Bhave became the first recipient of the international Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
In 1963, a documentary film on the social-reformer called “Vinoba Bhave, The Man,” directed by Vishram Bedekar and produced by the Government of India’s Films Division, was released. Bhave passed away on November 15, 1982. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1983.
