Wazir Ramsingh Pathania

(1824 – 1849) – Himachal Pradesh

Wazir Ramsingh Pathania (Aged 25), born on 10 April 1824 at Shyam Singh Pathania’s house, the wazir of king Veer Singh. He was a courageous warrior who devised a strategy against the British after contacting displaced rulers. On the night of August 14, 1848, with about 400 young soldiers, he attacked the fortified Shapoor Kandy Fort, killing many English soldiers.

The following day, he captured the Pathania fort, hoisted his flag, and declared the end of British rule in Nurpur State, naming Jaswant Singh as the new king and himself as its Wazir. In January 1849, he challenged the British again, leading to a fierce battle resulting in the death of many soldiers. Wazir Ramsingh Pathania killed Lieutenant John Peale, son-in-law of the then British Prime Minister, but eventually, his army was defeated.

As a result, he was arrested, deported, and imprisoned in Singapore, where he was severely tortured. Despite being a prisoner of war, he sacrificed his life for his motherland in a Singapore prison on 11 November 1849.
